Private jets fly higher than commercial airliners. A Boeing 737 MAX cruises at FL370–FL390. Most business jets operate at FL410–FL450. Some ultra long range aircraft certify to FL510–FL516. Here is why this matters and what it means in practice.
Why Business Jets Fly Higher Than Airliners
Higher altitude means lower air density, reduced aerodynamic drag, and better fuel efficiency — but only for aircraft designed for it. Business jets achieve this through higher-pressure fuselages (cabin altitude maintained at 6,000 ft equivalent vs. 8,000 ft on most commercial aircraft), more powerful engines relative to aircraft weight, and optimised wing aerodynamics for high-altitude cruise.

Passenger Benefits of Higher Altitude
Smoother flight. Most turbulence occurs in the troposphere below FL350. Above FL400, clear-air turbulence can still occur but the frequency and intensity drops significantly. Business jets routinely climb above weather systems that commercial aircraft must fly through.
Better cabin air quality. Private jets designed for FL450+ operation maintain cabin pressure at 6,000 ft equivalent (some newer models as low as 4,000 ft on the Global 7500 and G700). Commercial 737 cabins are pressurised to 8,000 ft. The difference: meaningfully less fatigue on flights over 3 hours.
Direct routing. ATC routes aircraft above FL350 on more direct flight paths. Business jets at FL430+ often receive more direct clearances than commercial traffic stacked below FL390.
