How to Track Private Jets in Real Time

Private jet tracking has become one of the most widely-discussed topics in aviation transparency. Here is how it actually works, which tools provide the most accurate data, and the limits of the system.

How Aircraft Tracking Works: ADS-B

Modern aircraft broadcast their position, altitude, speed, and identification code every 0.5–1 seconds via ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast). This signal is received by a global network of ground-based and space-based receivers and aggregated into real-time flight tracking databases. ADS-B is not encrypted — it was designed for air traffic control use, not privacy.

Why ADS-B Exchange Matters

FlightRadar24 and FlightAware allow aircraft owners to request LADD (Limiting Aircraft Data Displayed) blocks — effectively asking the aggregators to suppress their registration from public view. ADS-B Exchange is community-run and has a stated policy of not honouring these suppression requests. This is why @ElonJet, @BezosJet, and similar tracking accounts use ADS-B Exchange as their primary source.

In the US, the FAA's LADD programme (formerly PIA) allows aircraft owners to opt out of third-party tracking aggregators at the FAA level. ADS-B Exchange does not comply with LADD. In Europe, no equivalent LADD programme exists under EASA — European private aviation is fully trackable regardless of owner preference.

Tail Number Lookup

Aircraft registration (tail number) can be looked up in national civil aviation registries: Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (Germany), EASA registry (EU), CAA registry (UK), FAA registry (USA). These are public records. The corporate entity that holds the registration is often a shell company, but the registration itself is always public.

Limitations of Tracking

Some aircraft operate with no ADS-B transponder or with transponder off (illegal in controlled airspace, but possible in uncontrolled airspace). Military airspace transits suppress ADS-B. Ground time between flights does not show on tracking platforms. Fuel stops in countries with sparse ADS-B receiver coverage (parts of Africa, Central Asia) create gaps in historical tracks.
