Travelling with Pets by Private Jet
Private jet is the most stress-free way to fly with a dog or cat. No cargo hold, no separation, no airline-by-airline rule negotiation. Your pet sits with you in the cabin for the entire flight. Here is everything you need to prepare.
What Private Jet Allows That Airlines Do Not
On commercial airlines, large dogs (over 8 kg) go in the cargo hold — a separate pressurised but dark and cold compartment with no human contact. On a private jet, there is no such restriction by default. Most operators permit dogs and cats of any size in the cabin, on the seat or floor beside you.
Documentation Required for EU Travel
Within the EU (Schengen): EU Pet Passport, valid rabies vaccination (at least 21 days old), microchip (ISO 11784/11785). Your regular vet can issue the EU Pet Passport. Processing: 1–2 weeks for new passport, immediate for renewal.
Non-EU destinations (UK, UAE, Switzerland, USA): requirements vary significantly. UK: AHC (Animal Health Certificate) issued by an Official Veterinarian no more than 10 days before travel — allow 2–3 weeks to find a listed OV and schedule. UAE: MOCCAE import permit + health certificate. USA: USDA-endorsed health certificate.
Practical Tips for the Flight
- Familiar blanket or toy in the cabin reduces anxiety significantly on first flights
- No food 4–6 hours before flight (reduces nausea risk)
- Inform the operator about pet on booking — cleaning arrangements may be needed for subsequent charters
- Bring a portable water bowl — most operators do not carry pet supplies
- For anxious dogs: consult your vet about mild sedation; never use anti-anxiety medication without veterinary advice on altitude-specific dosing
Breeds with Respiratory Restrictions
Brachycephalic breeds (French Bulldogs, Pugs, Bulldogs, Boxers) are at elevated risk from altitude and stress. Private jet cabins are pressurised to 6,000–8,000 ft equivalent. For these breeds, vet clearance is strongly recommended before any flight, private or commercial.
